Kimi is the model family and chatbot from Moonshot AI, a Beijing startup founded in 2023 with Alibaba as its anchor investor and Tencent among its backers. Moonshot raised $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation in May, with reports of talks toward $30 billion, on the strength of one strategic bet: releasing genuinely capable models with open weights. Its flagship K2.5, released in January, is a 1 trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model, 32 billion parameters active per token, with native vision, a 256K context window, and an agent mode that can coordinate up to roughly 100 sub-agents in parallel. The weights sit on Hugging Face under a modified MIT license anyone can use commercially.

The part most coverage misses: it is inside Western tools

When we compared Cursor’s Composer 2.5 against Opus 4.7 and GPT-5.5, the headline was near-frontier coding performance at a tenth of the cost. The part that got less attention: Composer is built on the Kimi K2.5 open base, retrained by Cursor with its own reinforcement learning, under a commercial partnership with Moonshot. There was a brief flare-up in March when Cursor’s launch materials did not initially disclose the base model; Cursor later acknowledged it and Moonshot confirmed the arrangement. Western inference providers including Fireworks and Together AI host Kimi models directly.

Give away the model, and it becomes the substrate other companies build businesses on, which is a deeper form of the lock-in economics Western labs pursue with free compute credits. Moonshot monetizes through partnerships and its own products while its architecture spreads through the ecosystem for free.

What this means for teams evaluating AI tools

Two practical points. First, open weights change the data-sovereignty math: running K2.5 on your own or a US provider’s hardware means no data touches Chinese servers, which is a different risk profile from using a Chinese company’s hosted API. Second, model provenance is becoming a real procurement question. Some regulated buyers restrict Chinese-origin models regardless of where they run; if that describes your compliance environment, it now takes an extra question, “what base model is this tool built on?”, to know whether your coding assistant qualifies. Vendors do not always volunteer the answer, as the Cursor disclosure episode showed.

What to watch

Watch whether more Western developer tools build on Chinese open bases now that Cursor has normalized it, and whether US procurement or export policy starts treating model provenance the way it treats hardware provenance.
